Yep, the rumors are true: I’m teaching junior high and high school choir in my hometown!

Bessemer High School called me a few weeks ago to step in for the semester, so I’m flexing my educator muscles. It’s been a fun and exciting challenge.

Some highlights so far:
✅ Getting the girls basketball team to add the opening of Sweeney Todd to their warm-up playlist; they thought it would be the best way to psyche out the other team.
✅ Learning Gen Z vocabulary like “Poggers.”
✅ Showing junior high kids why Pavarotti singing 9 high C’s in a row is awesome.
✅ Having an open discussion about race and discrimination after my high school kids watched “West Side Story.”

The past year has brought so many unexpected things, but returning to AD Johnston High probably takes the cake. Here’s to expecting the unexpected!

It has been a couple months since I've had a new virtual performance to share with you. But fear not — I'll be back on your favorite device tomorrow performing "America, Come Home" with the New York Festival of Song!

And we are doing a live Q&A after tomorrow's program!

Steve and I are co-hosting the program which features songs by Leonard Bernstein, Paul Simon, Richard Danielpour, Mohammed Fairouz, William Grant Still, Irving Berlin, and George Gershwin give us hope for the future—and close the door on 2020 once and for all. The concert features soprano Angel Riley; mezzo-sopranos Amanda Lynn Bottoms and Isabel Leonard; tenors Joshua Blue and myself; baritones Justin Austin and Thomas Hampson; cellist Laura Metcalf; and pianists Steven Blier and Lucy Yates.
